Do you consider yourself to be a good poker player? Are you in need of a poker calculator while in game? If you had the mind of Howard Lederer, you would become the second poker professor. He is widely acknowledged as one of the most tactical poker players in the world and earned his nickname, “the Professor”, for his great skills and knowledge about poker. You may already have seen his name in a poker game for your mobile phone, or perhaps read his book. Howard lived his childhood together with two parents and his sister, also a professional poker player, Annie Duke. The two were introduced to the world of card games even before they turned into teenagers. Howard’s fascination for strategic moves became more and more apparent as he would start competing with friends and family, playing virtually every popular card game there is, including black jack. His biggest role model was his father, who – according to Howard – never let his son win intentionally. Therefore, it became a huge quest for Howard to defeat his father. When college called for Howard, he got acquainted with chess and decided to dedicate a lot of time to become a professional. Like many of the other poker professionals of today, Howard decided to move to New York and find the action on the east coast. But instead of playing chess, he got hooked on poker and discovered that he could make a good income from defeating other players. As dedicated as he could become, Howard spent up to 80 hours every week, playing and studying nothing but poker. Although Howard was by all means no poker professional, he learned how to play and improved, day by day. Unfortunately, Howard did not succeed well enough with his poker play and decided to move on from the regular tournament play. He joined the famous Mayfair Club where most people used to play bridge and backgammon. Back then, Texas Hold’em No Limit was uncommon, although growing. When he discovered the depth of the game, he was hooked on and could not let go. As the game grew in popularity, it was spread among the other club members, such as Erik Seidel and Dan Harrington, who has won championship bracelets at the World Series of Poker. As Texas Hold’em was gaining some ground in Las Vegas, Howard once again decided to leave everything he had behind and move to another state. In the middle of the Nevada desert, he watched the poker game grow and increase in popularity. As he was already experienced with the game, he had an edge over beginners and managed to build a solid bankroll. His attempt to risk his money in No Limit and Limit tables was a good decision, but he felt like something was missing. A call and a flight later, his sister Annie checked in and became his fellow poker friend. The two shared experiences, questions and answers. As of today, Howard has a lifetime seat in the WSOP hall of fame. He has ended up in the money in over 34 WSOP competitions and holds two championship bracelets. His sister is by all means a poker professional as well and holds the record of being the most successful WSOP player of all women. Howard fancies online poker just as much as we do, but if you’re up against him in real life, remember that this guy is nearly impossible to read. He has a face that looks the same at all times and a posture that doesn’t move an inch throughout the play. In other words, you may need a brain scanner to win. |
